Solidarity with Manchester FBU after huge cuts announced – What you can do…

From FBU

In an attempt to impose a new shift system, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMF&RS) are planning to sack all of their firefighters using Section 188 of the Trade Union Labour Relations Act, then only re-employ those who agree to the new contract.

In the past 10 years their shift system has changed three times. In the current plans firefighters would work 12 hour shifts, ruining their work-life balance. One in five jobs would also go – 250 in total. Staff have not agreed to the change. Limited discussion has taken place with the FBU who represent 95% of Greater Manchester firefighters.

This is a plain attempt to make cuts to jobs and fire cover. Since 2010, over 600 firefighter jobs have gone in Greater Manchester (30%) yet in the last year there was a 140% increase in rescues but a tragic three-fold increase in fire deaths.

The service needs to engage meaningfully with the FBU. Their approach undermines industrial relations. It seeks to undermine the FBU and to breach nationally agreed procedures put in place to avoid these issues occurring. An injury to one is an injury to all.
