Teachers: Teachers at Merrill Academy Derby, members of the NUT and NASUWT, are taking a further two days of strike action on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd January in response to management’s refusal to negotiate over the imposition of an unachievable appraisal target and the resulting lack of pay progression for the majority of teachers. The strike on Tuesday 13th January saw the school closed for all but Year 11 pupils and a big, lively picket on the gates. The strikers are determined to win this dispute because they are fed up of being bullied and threatened and feeling that no matter how hard they work, nothing is ever good enough. The academy sponsor, Derby College, is at present refusing to amend the target or negotiate pay and appraisal policies which comply with the joint NUT / NASUWT checklist. If their position does not change then members of both unions will be out again for three days the following week.
