GMB Members In NHS In England And Northern Ireland Strike Action On Monday 24 November In On-going Pay Dispute

Intransigence of government and employers is to blame for second wave of industrial action in NHS says GMB.

GMB members in the NHS in England and Northern Ireland will take part in a second week of industrial action beginning with strike action on Monday 24 November between 7am-11am in England and 8am-midday in Northern Ireland. This is an ongoing dispute over pay. See notes to editors for some of the locations where there will be GMB picket lines. At Northwick Park Hospital in North West London GMB members will have the DeLorean DMC-12 car from the film “Back to the future” on their picket line from 8.30 a.m. accusing the Tories of taking us back in time on cuts to the NHS.

The four-hour stoppage will be followed by action short of a strike from 11.01am (12.01pm in Northern Ireland) on Monday to 23.59 on Sunday 30 November, with an overtime ban in the ambulance service and other NHS employees working to their contracted hours.

This is the second week of industrial action in the NHS in an ongoing dispute over pay. The previous week of action involved a four-hour strike on 13 October and action short of a strike on 14-17 October.

GMB conducted an official ballot of 22,000 members in the NHS in England and Northern Ireland. There was overwhelming support for industrial action against the government and employers’ pay policies.

The pay offer for NHS staff in England is an unconsolidated 1% pay award in 2014, restricted to staff not eligible for incremental progression and the same approach in 2015. This goes against the recommendation of the independent NHS Pay Review Body for a 1% consolidated pay rise for all staff.

Rehana Azam, GMB National Officer, said: “NHS workers begin a second week of industrial action with a four-hour stoppage on Monday morning. We regret having to inconvenience NHS users again, but the intransigence of the government and employers leaves us no choice.

We are open to talks but the Health Secretary still refuses to meet the unions. This is not the way to go about dispute resolution. We’ve managed to get a settlement in Wales in part because the Welsh government was prepared to enter into dialogue. Jeremy Hunt needs to get round the table and make more money available for a settlement.

This dispute arose when the government overruled the independent NHS Pay Review Body, which had recommended an across-the-board pay rise. Health workers have already endured several years of pay freezes and caps. They are understandably angry and frustrated at the cavalier way they have been treated.

The planned action will undoubtedly cause widespread disruption to NHS services. However, we have sent formal notification of this action to all affected NHS employers so that they can work out essential cover requirements to ensure patient safety.

GMB has agreed at regional level with Ambulance Services that life-threatening and certain other categories of call (such as renal dialysis and Oncology patients) will be responded to by GMB ambulance crews during the forthcoming dispute in the NHS.  In addition, GMB has agreed that the major and hazardous incident team will remain on duty in case a major incident occurs.”
