For over 20 years, employers in the construction industry used secret files to vet new recruits. They checked to see who were trade union and health and safety activists and kept them out of employment. In March 2009 this scandal came to light when the Information Commissioner’s Office raided the offices of the Consulting Association and found an illegal blacklist with the details of 3,213 construction workers, which had been used by over 40 UK construction companies.
Yet even now, most on the blacklist don’t realise their names are on. Nor has a penny been paid to anyone who found themselves barred from work with no reason given. The TUC is calling for a full public inquiry into the blacklisting scandal along the lines of the Leveson Inquiry into press behaviour.
The companies involved need to Own Up and accept responsibility for their past discriminatory and illegal practices.
They also need to Clean Up by establishing transparent recruitment procedures, agreed with unions, that are properly monitored.
Then they must Pay Up and compensate all those who were unable to work in the industry again or had years of unemployment because they were on the list.
The TUC and the unions GMB, UCATT and Unite are holding a Lobby of Parliament on 20 November 2013, to put pressure on MPs to hold an inquiry.Assemble on Old Palace Yard opposite the Houses of Parliament at 13:00.
