Hovis strike: Week 2-Day #1 report

11 September 2013

Hovis workers went back out on strike this morning for 7 days with over 40 pickets outside the factory gates
They were joined by over 70 people attended a solidarity picket called by BFAWU supported by NW TUC and Unite the Resistance.

Solidarity pickets helped block lorries going into the plant causing disruption and upset to Hovis management.Singing and chanting of “The workers united will never be defeated” broke out while vehicles were backed up the narrow lane outside the factory gates.

Delegations were present from Salford TUC, Bolton Unison, Bolton GMB, Bolton Mental Health Unison, Lancs TUC, Lancs NUT, Manchester TUC, Salford Unison with support from members of RMT, Unison and UNITE.Also present was North West Unison Regional Secretary Kevin Nelson.

The feeling was that Hovis union members were doing something to stop this horrible zero hour contracts rather than just talk about it.They deserve every trade unionists full support. Hovis pickets applauded the solidarity they had received and vowed to keep up the fight.

Their fight against Zero Hour contracts is truly inspirational and we would urge all trade unionist to go down to their 24 hour picket line over the next week to show their support.
Final plans are being laid for their demonstration on Saturday which will March from Wigan town centre. Details to follow.
Further solidarity pickets are likely to be organised for early next week.
