Brighton bin workers march on town hall

9 May 2013

Hundreds of refuse workers today left the Hollingdean Road depot occupation to march to a council meeting at Brighton town hall.

Councillor Jason Kitcat, the Green council leader addressed the crowd but was inaudible over workers chants.

They chanted, “What do we want? Kitcat out!”.

Addressing the council chief executive, Penny Thompson, they shouted, “Penny, Penny, Penny – not one Penny.”

The Green Party is split in Brighton over the implementation of a £4,000 pay cut for the City Clean workers.

One Green councillor holding a Green Party placard which read, “No Pay Cuts” spoke to say that he fully supported the workers.

GMB demoAt a mass meeting before the march workers voted to return to work tomorrow morning after a two day sit-in at the depot.

The 300 plus workers will now begin the process of an official industrial action ballot.

It is rumoured that workers will now begin a work to rule. The dispute is far from over!
