A solid national strike of around 8,000 NUJ and BECTU union members at the BBC saw Easter programmes disrupted as workers struck back against compulsory redundancies, excessive workloads and bullying.
The joint 12-hour strike saw BBC workers walk out offices and studios at 12 noon, with trade union activists and anti-austerity campaigners there to cheer them out the door. In some places, such as BBC Broadcasting House in central London and BBC Scotland in Glasgow, pickets were hundreds strong.
Workers were making a stand against the BBC’s so-called “Delivering Quality First” initiative (DQF), a cost-cutting programme which will result in the loss of 2,000 jobs across the corporation.
