4 February 2013
Following the successful Unite the Resistance Conference in November which drew over 1,000 trade unionists and campaigners together, trade unionists and activists in Camden and Westminster held a Unite the Resistance launch meeting of the pamphlet ‘Trade Unions and the Fight Against Austerity…. a strategy to win’.
The meeting, held on Tuesday 22 Jan 2013, was introduced by contributor John McDonnell and attended by 22 people.
The introduction and contributions focused on understanding the current situation we are facing–the intensification of the savage Tory cuts and the urgent need to organise our collective strength against these attacks and for a coordinated trade union response.
The need for building solidarity and links between different campaigns and disputes that are taking place in the locality, and how we can campaign for national action were central themes of the meeting. In particular we discussed linking the NHS campaigns, Camden United for Benefit Justice campaign, campaigning against the closure of fire stations (FBU) and the London living wage campaign.
We decided to hold a planning meeting to further discuss how we link all of these (and other) campaigns together and start organising for a local Unite the Resistance conference.
The planning meeting will take place on February 26th, 6.30pm, SOAS room: T102, 22 Russell Sq. WC1.
If you live, work or are part of a union branch or campaign within the central London area, please come along to the Unite the Resistance planning meeting, bring your ideas and spread the word.
