Petition: TUC – name the day for a general strike

19 September 2012

The TUC passed a resolution at its annual congress earlier this month committing it to consider ‘the practicalities’ of a general strike.

Now we need to make sure this call is turned into real action against austerity.

The petition reads:

TUC: turn words into action
Name the day for a general strike

We the undersigned believe the Con-Dem government’s austerity drive is wrecking the economy and destroying jobs and services. These attacks are intensifying.

We welcome the TUC’s ‘March for a future that works’ demonstrations in London, Glasgow and Belfast on 20 October and pledge to build them as widely as possible.

We also welcome decision of the TUC Congress to support a motion in favour of a general strike against austerity.

We call on the TUC to name the day as soon after the 20 October demos as possible.

We call on the TUC to release resources to regional TUCs and trades councils to build rallies and public bmeetings in major cities and towns to cement support for a general strike and national/regional demonstrations to coincide with it.

About time! I’ve wondered for ages why the whole nation just hasn’t risen against corporate greed, right wing policies of giving to those who already have, irresponsible spending on stupid military adventures, obscene bonuses in the city…. and all this under both Tories AND Blair’s so-called Labour government! Bring it on – and not just one day, but again and again until some kind of sanity rules.
