Unite the Resistance and the National Union of Mineworkers have joined forces to call two public meetings in the North East to raise support and solidarity for the 8,000 miners on strike in Spain.
The strike to defend the miners’ jobs and communities has included occupations of the threatened pits and a 250-mile march from the mining areas to Madrid. The strike has been an inspiration to other workers fighting austerity across Europe.
For many in Britain, the Spanish miners’ fight is also reminiscent of the Great Miners’ Strike of 1984-85 – and of the wave of solidarity from ordinary workers that sustained the miners and their families for a year.
Striking spanish miner Segundo Menendez Collar will speak at the UtR/NUM public meetings, along with NUM North East area secretary Davy Hopper and speakers from the Unite and RMT unions.
